Portable apps
Portable apps run from a folder instead of being installed. QuickInstaller finds them, checks them for updates and updates them where they already live. This page also explains the Portable edition, a copy of QuickInstaller that needs no installation either.
Find your portable apps
Open Portable Applications in the list on the left. QuickInstaller looks for program files (.exe) in the folders it watches and shows each one with its version. Click Check and it matches them against its catalog, so the list narrows to the apps it recognizes.
Choose which folders are scanned
- Click the Settings button (the gear) in the title bar.
- Choose App lists & sources and find Portable apps.
- Add folders to Portable Apps Included Paths: (;). Add folders to skip to Portable Apps Excluded Paths: (;). Separate folders with semicolons.
- Click Reset next to a list to restore its defaults.
Update in place
- Click Check.
- Tick the apps you want, or let Automatically select apps with available updates tick them for you.
- Click Update. You can also right-click one app and choose Apply Update.
The new version replaces the app in the folder where it already lives. To get a shortcut after each update, turn on Create shortcut after update: in the same Settings section.
Delete a portable app
Select the apps and click Delete, or right-click an app and choose Delete App.... QuickInstaller opens Review deletion. Pick Delete permanently or Move to Recycle Bin, then click Delete app (or Delete N apps).
Permanent deletion removes the program file, and removes its folder only if the folder is then empty. To make the Recycle Bin the starting choice, turn on Move portable app deletions to the Recycle Bin by default.
The Portable edition
The Download page offers Portable as a ZIP that holds one QuickInstaller.exe. Extract it and run it from any folder or a USB drive. Pick the build that matches your Windows (x86 or x64, and ARM64 where the page offers it).
- It needs no installation and no separate runtime.
- Your settings are saved in QuickInstaller.ini next to the program, created the first time a setting is saved.
- Logs and temporary files stay in your Windows profile on each PC. A Portable copy and an installed copy never share settings, logs or schedules.
- It can update itself. QuickInstaller asks you not to remove the drive while that happens.
