Troubleshooting and FAQ
Most problems show up as a status on the app's row or in a dialog. These are the common ones and what each means.
An app will not update silently
If the row says Cannot update automatically, that app's definition does not allow silent installs. Right-click the row and choose Install Update instead, which shows the installer. Automatic (scheduled) updates skip these apps, and they also skip updates that need administrator access when QuickInstaller has none.
"Update completed, but Windows still reports the same version"
The installer finished, but Windows still reports the old version, even after QuickInstaller waited briefly. Right-click the row and choose Refresh Values. If that does not change it, restart QuickInstaller or Windows.
An app still looks outdated right after updating
Check the row's status.
- Restart Required: restart Windows. The status clears only after a real restart. Restart computer in the menu (the menu button at the top right) starts one.
- OK - Superseded: another, newer version of the same program is installed beside it, and that newer one carries the update.
- Server Error: QuickInstaller's server could not refresh that app's update info. This is usually temporary and it keeps retrying.
An app is missing from Browse
Type at least three characters, then press Enter or choose Search. Check Category, Type and License, which narrow the list. Browse lists only packages your Windows and processor can run. If the app is not in the catalog, install it yourself, run Check For Updates in Installed Applications or Portable Applications, and submit it. Microsoft Store and built-in Windows apps cannot be submitted.
QuickInstaller could not update itself
A dialog titled QuickInstaller update failed offers Retry update and Repair QuickInstaller. Retry update tries again, and Repair QuickInstaller runs the repair path. Choosing either removes both buttons while it runs. For Portable, do not remove the drive while it updates.
Find the log file
Open Settings › Data & diagnostics › Logging & diagnostics and choose Open Log File. Shortcuts: press Ctrl+Shift+L, or choose Open log... on the tray icon. By default the log is QuickInstaller.log in %LocalAppData%\QuickInstaller (Portable: QuickInstallerPortable.log in %LocalAppData%\QuickInstaller Portable), unless you changed Log/temp settings file Location.
Report a problem from inside QuickInstaller
- Choose the Submit feedback button at the top right, or right-click an app row and choose Report feedback.
- Fill in the subject and message, and add an email address if you want a reply.
- Tick Send logs to attach QuickInstaller's logs, then choose Send.
Windows permission prompts
QuickInstaller itself runs with normal permission. When an install needs administrator access, the Windows prompt (UAC) is the only prompt. Turn on Keep administrator access until QuickInstaller closes (Settings › Downloads & installation › Installation behavior) to reuse the first approval until the app closes; it is off by default, so each batch asks once. Declining the prompt cancels the whole batch. See Administrator prompts.
